How to Choose the Right Dining Table Size
Start with the room rather than the table. A dining table needs enough space around it for chairs to move and for people to pass comfortably. The calculator uses your room dimensions to compare the available space with typical round, oval and rectangular table sizes.
A larger table is not always the better choice. The right proportions should make the table feel central to the room without making the surrounding space difficult to use.
Round Dining Table Sizes
Round dining tables create a sociable setting and work particularly well in square rooms or spaces where people move around the table from several directions.
As a general guide, a table around 120–140cm in diameter can work well for six people, while larger 150–160cm round tables provide more room for eight. The calculator considers both seating and the available room around the table.
Oval and Rectangular Dining Tables
Oval and rectangular dining tables make better use of the length of a room and can provide more seating than a round table of a similar width.
Oval tables retain softer edges and can make movement around a larger table easier, while rectangular tables create a stronger, more architectural layout.

How much space should I leave around a dining table?
You need enough room for chairs to pull away from the table and for people to move around them. The Virrelli calculator uses approximately 100cm as its comfortable guide and 90cm as its minimum guide, although doors, walkways and other furniture should also be considered.
What size round dining table seats six people?
As a guide, a round dining table around 120–140cm in diameter can work well for six people. The room itself also matters, so use the calculator to check the available space around the table.
What size dining table seats eight people?
For eight people, a round table is typically around 150–160cm in diameter, while an oval or rectangular table will generally need around 200–220cm of length. Exact dimensions vary by design and seating arrangement.
Is a round or rectangular table better for a small room?
A round table can work particularly well in a compact or square room because it has no corners and allows easier movement around it. A rectangular table may make better use of a longer room.
